Laura Katz Rizzo is currently BFA Dance Program Director in Temple University’s Esther Boyer College of Music and Dance. In addition to her faculty position at Temple University, Dr. Rizzo has taught at Mount Holyoke College, Bryn Mawr College, Drexel University, the Pennsylvania Academy of Ballet, the Dance Theatre of the Southwest, Ballet Theater of New Mexico, among other institutions. She holds a BA in History and English, an Ed. M in Dance Education, a Graduate Certificate in Women’s Studies and Ph. D. in Dance Studies. Laura is certified in the Vaganova method of ballet pedagogy, as well as being an ABT certified teacher. As a student, she performed with The Joffrey Ballet and New York City Ballet, later performing professionally with several classical ballet companies, including Ballet South, the Russian Ballet Theatre of Delaware, the Santa Fe Opera Company, and The Ballet Theatre of New Mexico, as well as several contemporary and baroque dance companies, including Dance Theatre X, Opus I Contemporary and Sprezzatura Dance Ensemble. Her repertoire includes principal roles in The Sleeping Beauty, The Nutcracker, Les Patineurs, Firebird, Swan Lake, Cinderella, Dark Elegies, Raymonda, Paquita, and many other classical and contemporary ballets. Laura is an active researcher, regularly presenting her scholarly work at national and international conferences, and conducting research, teaching and choreographic residencies at institutions across the United States and abroad. Most recently, Laura has returned from teaching a series of master classes Yale University and at the University of Utah’s Department of Ballet and participated in Central Pennsylvania Youth Ballet’s Choreoplan 2013 where she made a new work for the company. Her upcoming book, “Dancing the Fairy Tale: Producing and Performing The Sleeping Beauty,” is forthcoming from Temple University Press.
