I have had a studio for a while and we have a performance group that is a team and dances around our community. The group is looking into starting dance competitions. I however do not know a lot about them. I danced in a company as a dancer and we did not do competitions. Any advice, help, information would be greatly appreciated. How do you pay? all cost involved? what to expect? where to go? We are located in the west texas region. thanks for all your help!

I think it really depends what you want to get out of the experience. There are "low key" competitions that are a nice way to start out, and there are the upper level competitions. If it were me, I would start with a google search for some regional options. Most competitions you pay per dancer per dance. For example if you have a group of girls performing 3 numbers they would pay $20 each per entry - for a total of $60 in entrance fees per kid. There are also costume costs, and incidentals included. People often say that technique is the most important element in competition performances - and while I agree, I think there is also much to be said for having your kids look put together and prepared - which means matching shoes, uniform hair and makeup and well-tailored costumes. It doesn't mean those things have to be expensive, but they do have to be considered so your kids will feel confident on stage, and your parents will feel like you've set their kids up to succeed. Good luck!
