Where to Stay in
New York
Updated February 2005
The process of updating the information about your housing options in NYC
transported me back to my own first summer in this pulsing, glittering, one-of-a-kind
city where dancing dreams come true. I arrived from my native Michigan, very
excited and very determined to find my own special niche in the Dance Capitol
of the World. I'll wager that you, too, are hoping you'll not only survive
but thrive in this fabled town that is home to the bright lights of Broadway,
the Radio City Rockettes, the best ballet and modern dance companies anywhere
on the globe, legendary dance teachers, ground-breaking choreographers, and
year-round opportunities to see dance performances everywhere from the city's
great stages to the streets themselves.
But first, we've got to find you a safe and affordable place to hang your
hat -- and your dancing shoes! When I was a starry-eyed hopeful, I stayed
at the Barbizon Hotel for Women near Bloomingdale's on Lexington Avenue. I
had a skinny little room barely big enough for a single bed, and I shared
a dormitory-style bathroom down the hall with all the girls on the floor.
Still, I thought I was in Heaven! After all, I was only a subway ride away
from the classes and auditions that I had only read about before. I'm sure
you can relate! Later, when I was a member of Thalia Mara's Ballet Repertory,
I lived at the Gorham Hotel with two other dancers, sharing a bathroom and
a kitchentte. That meant I was walking distance from classes and the theatre
district, so by then I was in Seventh Heaven! The Barbizon has since become
a high-end regular hotel rather than a residence, but the Gorham has become
the Blakley (see below) and rates are still fairly reasonable. Also, there
are plenty of other places for you to begin your New York dancing odyssey.
Here's the list. The very best of luck! |

Desirable
hotels in Manhattan typically charge well over $100 a day for one or
two people in a room. This may not be an option if you're planning
to stay for any length of time. However, if you are coming just
for a week's visit to take some open classes and maybe see a few
shows, call for information on these centrally-located hotels or contact
your travel agent for info on any of the major hotel chains.
Also, many of the hotels listed below have better long term
rates. |

Many New Yorkers
leave town for the summer and those with rent-stabilized apartments
cannot legally charge more than 10% above the base rents for
sublets. Owners of co-ops or condos can charge whatever they please. You
can probably find a studio (one room with kitchenette and bath)
in a building with an elevator and a doorman for $1800-$2200 a
month; a studio in a building with a buzzer and an elevator for $1500-$1700;
and a studio in a walk-up building with a buzzer for $1400-$1500
a month. One-bedrooms range from $2000 to $2700 depending on
amenities. For teachers or parents chaperoning two or three students,
this may be the ideal solution, if you bring sleeping bags or futons and
sleep dormitory style. Visit www.nytimes.com and click on Real
Estate. Check the boxes the options you want, including "Sublet," and click
on "Search." |
